Helping to demystify industrial
digitalisation in UK manufacturing

The Smart way to Industry 4.0 with PROFINET based technologies

26 April, 2019

INCASE (“Industry 4.0 via Networked Control Applications and Sustainable Engineering”), co-organised by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI UK)and the European Interreg Project, are free-to-attend seminars that will address the key practical issues arising from the use of digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and process industry applications, with particular attention to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0. Smart Machines & Factories reports.

Opening with a keynote address given by PI Chairman Karsten Schneider introducing PI’s current and developing technologies for Industry 4.0, the event will cover key application areas such as mechanical handling and logistics, robotics, automotive engineering, electrical and electronics assembly, control systems and energy management, utilities, pharmaceutical, packaging and printing.

Supported by demonstrations of actual tools used in configuration and maintenance, these events focus very much on the practical aspects of using PROFINET and IO-Link, from system design and safety considerations through to fault-finding and maintenance. The events will therefore be of great value to designers, production/system engineers, instrument technicians/engineers and C&I engineers involved in the design, operation and maintenance of modern automated factories and process plant.

Part of the day includes parallel tracks, so that you can either refresh your knowledge as a beginner in PROFINET or as a more experienced user find new ideas for applications. Hence, these events are highly recommended both for newcomers and people who have attended our previous events.

Topics will include:

• Overview of PI’s current and developing technologies for Industry 4.0

• PROFINET basics

• Ethernet's copper physical layer finally unveiled

• IO-Link for the "last metres" communication

• Process Automation networks with PROFIBUS and PROFINET

• Network Safety & Security

• Cybersecurity

• PROFIBUS DP / PA diagnostics

• EMC for networks

• PROFINET diagnostics

• Redundancy for PROFINET networks

• Designing & virtual commissioning: co-simulation with Siemens NX

• PROFINET's "oversampling" and "I-Device" features: industrial cases for control and signal processing

Specialists will present the seminars from PI member companies from the UK and neighbouring countries across the Channel. Attendance is free of charge to pre-registered delegates from the User community, i.e. companies that own, operate, design, build or maintain automated plant. The events will provide delegates with an excellent networking opportunity and the ability to discuss technical issues with our experts.

Exhibition

In addition to a highly informative seminar covering the essentials of using PROFINET and IO-Link towards smarter manufacturing, the events will also feature an exhibition of the latest products from PI-UK member companies including:

• AJM Engineering Management

• BEKA Associates

• Belcom Cables

• Control Specialists

• Endress+Hauser

• HMS UK

• Hitex UK

• Industrial Communication Products

• Procentec

• Siemens

• WAGO

There will also be a special demonstration of the INCASE Interreg 2 Seas Project provided by project partners UGent and KU Leuven from Belgium, and the University of Essex and the University of Kent. A joint experiment showing how redundant networks “survive” massive EMI disturbance, demonstration of oversampling techniques in IO Devices, I-Devices running MATLAB generated code, all the way up to co-simulation technology using Siemens NX.

Smart Industry Conferences

PI UK has recently announced its role as an official supporter of The Smart Industry series of Conferences. According to the organiser the events were launched to "address and unravel the vast array of conflicting information around 4IR, discussing the practicalities, technologies and issues surrounding transition and implementation of digitalisation in manufacturing across key market sectors in clear and concise language."

The conferences’ main aim is to provide a practical, jargon-free opportunity to those starting out on the digital transformation process, to experience a complete smart roadmap, highlighting the incremental stages of the 4IR journey covering all aspect of the digital transformation. This fits in with one of the main aims of PROFINET together with IO-Link, already well accepted as the backbone of Industry 4.0.

This year the events cover Smart Industry Food & Beverage; Smart Industry Automotive; and Smart Industry Aerospace, all of which typify the industrial segments that rely on our technologies in their smart, connected factories and process plant. In addition in 2020, Smart Industry Expo returns, with its theme “The Future of Integrated Automation”, which is exactly what PI stands for.
